About Gwen

Registered Veterinary Nurse

Hi, I’m Gwen and I am the owner and founder of Gwen’s Choice Canine Health & Nutrition. I am a Registered Veterinary Nurse, having qualified over 20 years ago and for much of that time I have been working in veterinary practice as head veterinary nurse.

Gwen’s Choice was founded in 2021 when I established my own brand of dog food and have now expanded the business to become a training provider with iPET Network, delivering canine first aid courses to both dog owners and canine professionals alike.

I started my veterinary nursing career as an auxiliary nurse in a mixed practice in North Wales back in 1995, qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse at the turn of the century in January 2000…..and in fact still work part time in the same practice as the Head Nurse today!  I’m an experienced clinical tutor and have spent much of my nursing career training and mentoring student veterinary nurses.

I also have a keen interest in dog behaviour and hold a BVNA (British Veterinary Nursing Association) Certificate in Companion Animal Behaviour and enjoy hosting puppy socialisation sessions in practice.

More About Gwen’s Choice Dog Food?

Gwen’s Choice was founded in response to my own frustration that it was so difficult to find a healthy and nutritious food for my own dogs, and even harder to recommend a brand to others. When I started looking beyond the colourful bags, clever marketing, and vague ingredients list, what I found out was truly shocking.

The reality is what is marketed on the packaging of most dog foods is nowhere near a true reflection of what is included inside. Often the main ingredients are cereals, like wheat and maize with very little meat content at all. Even when food is described as something like lamb and rice, it is usually at best more rice than lamb. I believe the reason behind this is that 90% of all pet food sold in the UK is produced by 3 main companies – Nestle, Mars and Colgate-Palmolive. Owning most of the well-known brands of dog food, they have complete market domination and use clever marketing to sell their products for inflated prices, rather than using quality ingredients and clear labelling.

Convenience, Quality & Value

Many dog owners have gone as far as choosing to ditch commercially prepared dog food and feed raw and homecooked diets. There is no denying that this type of feeding can be a good choice, but it needs careful consideration in terms of nutritional balance, and the honest truth is that most people lead busy lives and preparing fresh food for ourselves every day can be challenging enough, without having to prepare fresh dog food too!

With clear product description, full ingredient list and trusted advice I hope that Gwen’s Choice will strike the right balance between convenience, product quality and value for money.
