Nutritional Dog Food

Grain free dog food is exactly what it says – dog food which does not include grains.
Grains are used in dog food as a source of carbohydrate and typically include wheat, corn, barley, oats and rice.

These grains are not necessarily bad for your dog if fed in moderation, but they are often used in excess as cheap fillers to bulk up dog food.

Some grains, particularly wheat and corn can be difficult for dogs to digest, especially in large quantities and can trigger dietary intolerance and allergies. A diet rich in simple carbohydrates such as grains can also cause too much insulin production, leading to weight gain and its associated risks, as well as an increased risk of diabetes.

My advice would be to always read the list of ingredients – if the main ingredient sounds like horse or chicken food then it is probably best to reconsider!
Grain free dog food typically has a higher meat content but is not completely free from carbohydrates. Carbohydrate is a useful source of energy and fibre. In grain free food it is usually provided through grain alternative ingredients.

We are always happy to chat and our focus is always on choosing the best nutritional dog food.

The Gwen’s Choice Grain Free Range uses sweet potato as the main source of carbohydrate, which is a healthy, digestible, complex carbohydrate which is also high in fibre. Fibre slows down the release of sugars keeping your dog feeling fuller for longer and helps to stabilize blood sugar.

There are several options in the Gwen’s Choice grain free range to suit puppies, adults, small breed and working dogs. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
